Cinnabar is mercury sulfide (HgS), a naturally occurring mineral. In jewelry it is worn on the skin — not ingested — and is stable at everyday temperatures. Normal wear comes down to simple precautions: don’t put it in your mouth, avoid prolonged high heat, and keep pieces away from small children.
Cinnabar — known in Chinese as 朱砂 (zhūshā), and as the mineral cinnabar or 辰砂 (chénshā) — is mercury sulfide (HgS), a naturally occurring mineral with a distinctive red color. It has been carved and ground for pigment in China for centuries, including Taoist and artistic traditions. ZenWrist’s collection includes 96 hand-carved pieces, 54 of them cinnabar — bracelets (59 designs), pendants (28) and car hangings & decor (9).
The question is fair: the name itself contains mercury. The key distinction is chemical form. In cinnabar, mercury atoms are locked into a crystal lattice with sulfur — this is not the free, liquid elemental mercury of thermometers. Jewelry-grade cinnabar is worn externally on the skin; it is never meant to be eaten, burned, or ground into powder. Because it is the most-asked question, every one of our 54 cinnabar product pages carries a direct mercury-safety answer in its FAQ.

Yes — cinnabar is mercury sulfide (HgS) by definition. The mercury is chemically bound inside the mineral crystal, which is different from free liquid mercury. Jewelry is worn on the skin, not ingested.
Yes, for normal external wear with simple precautions. The mineral is stable at everyday temperatures. Do not put the piece in your mouth, avoid prolonged high heat or open flame, and keep it away from small children. We make no medical or health claims.
Only at temperatures far above normal wear, such as open flame. Body heat, sunlight and room temperature do not break down mercury sulfide. Still, never heat cinnabar jewelry deliberately.
We do not recommend it for small children. Children may put objects in their mouths, and cinnabar pieces should never be chewed or swallowed.
Stop wearing it and handle the fragments carefully. Avoid creating or inhaling dust, collect the pieces, and contact us — we will advise on repair or replacement.
