The short answer

Cinnabar is a natural mineral — treat it like a carved stone, not like metal jewelry. Take it off for water, chemicals, and hard knocks; wipe it with a dry soft cloth after wearing; store it in its box away from other hard jewelry. That is 90% of care.

1. The three things to avoid

AvoidWhyInstead
Water soaking (shower, pool, hot spring)Loosens the elastic cord; dulls carved detail over timeTake it off before water
Hard knocks (dropping on tile, gym equipment)Cinnabar can chip — it is stone, not steelTake it off for sports and rough work
Chemicals (perfume, bleach, strong cleaners)Can stain or etch the polished surfaceApply perfume/skincare first, let dry, then wear

2. Cleaning: less is more

After each wear: wipe with a dry, soft cloth (the one in the box works). This removes skin oils and dust before they build up. Monthly: a cloth very slightly dampened with clean water, then dried immediately — never soak. Never: ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, alcohol wipes, or abrasive polishes. Carved details are the first thing aggressive cleaning destroys.

3. Storage

Store the bracelet in its own box or a soft pouch, away from harder stones (quartz, agate) that can scratch it in a drawer. Keep it at room temperature — no long exposure to strong sun or car dashboards in summer. If you will not wear it for months, a dry cloth wrap inside the box is enough; no oiling needed.

4. Color change: what is normal

Natural cinnabar often deepens slightly with months of wear — skin contact gently polishes the surface and the red can look richer. This is normal and many collectors like it. What is not normal: sudden black patches, powdery flaking, or a bead cracking through. If you see those, stop wearing the piece and contact us with photos.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean it?

Dry wipe every few days of wear; damp wipe monthly. Over-cleaning wears the surface faster than wearing it.

Can I shower with it on?

Take it off. Water will not poison anything, but soaking loosens the cord and dulls carving.

It looks darker than when new — normal?

Yes. A gradual deepening of red with wear is normal for natural cinnabar.

It chipped or cracked — can it be fixed?

Send us photos. Small chips are cosmetic; a cracked-through bead should be replaced, not worn.

Summer sweat and sunscreen?

Wipe after sweating; apply sunscreen first, let dry, then wear. Take it off for workouts.
