How to clean a cinnabar bracelet

A dry soft cloth after every wear is all most cinnabar bracelets need. Below: the safe step-by-step deep clean, the stains you can handle, and the methods you should never use.

1. Daily wiping: the 90% solution

Cinnabar is a natural mineral — think carved stone, not metal jewelry. The surface needs almost nothing from you: after wearing, wipe each bead with a dry, soft cloth (microfiber or the pouch that came in the box). This removes skin oils, dust, and sweat before they build up into a film. Done daily, this alone keeps a bracelet looking new for years.

2. Deep cleaning, step by step

When dust has settled into carved details and dry wiping is not enough:

  1. Lay a dry towel on the table.
  2. Dampen a corner of a soft cloth with clean water — wring it until it feels barely damp, not wet.
  3. Wipe each bead gently, following the carving lines. A soft dry brush (a clean makeup brush works) reaches dust inside carved details.
  4. Immediately follow with a dry cloth and let the bracelet air-dry completely before putting it back in its box.

Never leave the bracelet damp, and never soak it — water that sits in carved recesses loosens the elastic cord over time.

3. Never do this

MethodWhy not
Ultrasonic or steam cleanersVibration and heat crack mineral beads and destroy carved detail
Alcohol, disinfectant wipes, acetoneDull the polished surface and dry out the finish
Soaking in water (or soapy water)Loosens the elastic cord; soap film settles into carvings
Abrasive polishes or toothpasteScratches the surface and wears down carving edges
Heat or hair dryersThermal shock can crack the mineral

4. Stain guide

StainFix
Sweat / salt filmWipe dry right away; if film remains, one barely-damp wipe then dry immediately
Perfume, sunscreen, cosmeticsDamp-cloth wipe once, then dry; apply these products before wearing, not after
Dust in carved detailsSoft dry brush; do not scrape with metal tools
Dark spots that do not wipe offStop — natural deepening of red is normal, but sudden black patches or powdery flaking are not. Contact us with photos

5. How often: cleaning frequency

SituationMethodFrequency
Normal daily wearDry soft clothAfter every wear
Occasional wearDry soft clothEvery few days of wear
Dust in carvings / visible filmBarely-damp cloth + dry brushMonthly at most
After heavy sweating or accidental splashWipe dry immediatelyAs needed

Rule of thumb: less is more. Over-cleaning wears the surface faster than wearing it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a cinnabar bracelet safely?

Dry soft cloth after every wear; barely-damp cloth monthly. Never soak, never use alcohol or ultrasonic cleaners.

Can I use alcohol wipes?

No. Alcohol dulls the polish and dries out the finish — use a dry or barely-damp cloth instead.

Can I use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner?

No. Vibration and heat can crack the mineral and destroy carved details.

How do I remove sweat stains?

Wipe dry right after sweating. If a film remains, one barely-damp wipe followed by immediate drying.

It looks less shiny after cleaning — why?

Probably over-cleaned. Scale back to dry wiping; the luster usually returns with normal wear.
